How Best To Describe Belgium

If asked to describe Belgium in one word, I would say "gofdhusah." The Dutch-sounding word is actually an acronym I devised to describe Belgium, meaning "good food, drink, humor, sights and hospitality." It encompasses all the wonderful experiences that Marian, Wendy and I enjoyed with our relatives and friends in Wallonia, Flanders & Brussels.

While King Albert Badouin and Queen Paola find the governments of Belgium at an impass on how to retain a united country, the hardworking citizens continue to work diligently and enjoy their leisure time, gathering with family to share the fruits of their labor. They know they are blessed to have available to them the best food and drink Belgium has to offer: moules et veau, Spa eau, bieres Belges et une variete de vins, pomes de terre de primeurs, fromages, viandes froides, et naturellement frites avec la mayonnaise. (For Americans, that's mussels and veal, Spa water, Belgian beers and an endless variety of wines, new potatoes, cheeses, cold meats, and of course frites with mayonnaise.)

The people of Belgium are so much like the people of Wisconsin that it is difficile a creer des comparaisons contraires, difficult to conjure up contrary comparisons. In fact, we share a longstanding common history and enjoy the same unique source of happiness: gofdhusah.
